N-acetylcysteine is an agent among free radical scavengers which is used primarily as a mucolitic agent. Experimental studies have demonstrated protective effects of NAC on hepatic, renal, lung, and intestinal injuries. Methods. Wistar female rats were divided into 2 groups (control and NAC group), and the NAC group received intramuscular injections for 7 days. Flaps were raised on day 2 and rats were sacrified on day 7. Skin samples from the second cm and fifth cm of the skin flap were collected for biochemical and histopathological examinations. Results. The mean necrotic area ratios in the control and NAC group were 38% and 12%, respectively (P < 0.001). Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were significantly lower in skin samples collected from the control group as compared to samples obtained from the NAC group (P = 0.002). Superoxide dismustase (SOD) activity was significantly higher in the NAC group (P < 0.0001). Histopathologically, a significant increase in macrophage and fibroblast activity was observed in the NAC group. Mononuclear cell infiltration and fibroblast activity had increased, especially in samples from the fifth cm of the skin flap in the NAC group. The histopathological evaluation in the NAC group revealed protective effects of NAC. Conclusions. Treatment of rats with NAC significantly reduced flap necrosis and MDA levels while increasing SOD levels. These data suggest that NAC has a protective role in flap survival and demonstrates preventive effects against flap necrosis. WOUNDS 2013;25(3):68–74

Oral administration of alanyl-glutamine and glutamine improve random pattern dorsal skin flap survival in rats
Objective(s): Skin flap necrosis is the most common postoperative side effect in reconstructive surgeries. Glutamine (GLN) has been shown to accelerate wound healing process. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of GLN either in free form or in the dipeptide form along with L- alanyl (Ala-GLN) on random skin flaps survival in rats.Materials and Methods: Dorsal skin flaps with c...
متن کاملImproved viability of random pattern skin flaps with the use of bone marrow mesenchymal-derived stem cells and chicken embryo extract
Objective(s): Covering tissue defects using skin flaps is a basic surgical strategy for plastic and reconstructive surgery. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of chicken embryo extract (CEE) and bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) on random skin flap survival (RSF) in rats. Using chicken embryo extract can be an ideal environment for the growth and proliferation ...
متن کاملFavorable effects of progesterone on skin random flap survival in rats
Objective(s): The aim of this study is to determine the effects of progesterone treatment on the survival of random skin flaps. Materials and Methods: McFarlane flaps were established and 40 male rats were randomly assigned to the progesterone-treated as the test group or normal saline-treated as the control group. Progesterone or normal saline (10 mg/kg) was administered intraperitoneally onc...
متن کاملSkin Mast Cell Promotion in Random Skin Flaps in Rats using Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stem Cells and Amniotic Membrane
Background: Skin flap procedures are employed in plastic surgery, but failure can lead to necrosis of the flap. Studies have used bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) to improve flap viability. BM-MSCs and acellular amniotic membrane (AAM) have been introduced as alternatives. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of BM-MSCs and AAM on mast cells of random skin flaps (R...
متن کاملThe Effect of Enoxaparin and Clopidogrel on Survival of Random Skin Flap in Rat Animal Model
BACKGROUND Necrosis of skin flaps is considered as an important complication in reconstructive surgery. We conducted an experimental study to investigate the efficacy of low-molecular weight heparin, clopidogrel and their combination to improve the flap survival. METHODS Forty male, adult Sprague-Dawlay rats were divided randomly into 4 groups. Standard rectangular, distally based dorsal ran...
